Sustaining the Future of the Mediterranean

Quote of the Month

“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.

Urban forests provide hope for the Beirut River

The Beirut River and the surrounding neighborhoods have long suffered from short-sighted policy and blatant mismanagement.

The ecosystem was disrupted, and natural habitats have been destroyed. The #BeirutRiverForest project consists of planting trees on the banks of the river, as well as engaging with local associations, schools, and companies in developing a blueprint for the potential ‘green corridor’ of Beirut to emerge.

AMWAJ Watch Party: “We Made Every Living Thing from Water”

Filmed in the wake of the July 2015 trash crisis, ‘We Made Every Living Thing‘ highlights the dangerous impact environmental degradation is having in Lebanon and its water resources, and how in the face of governmental disregard for ecological concerns the public is starting to mobilize in order to protect a common resource.

We are thrilled to announce that we are holding a documentary watch party followed by a Q&A session with journalist Paul Cochrane and researcher Dr. Karim Eid-Sabbagh.

The watch party will be held on November 24 starting at 4:00 PM Beirut time (3:00 PM CET).

Revised Water Directive means safer EU tap water

Since its publication in 1998, the Drinking Water Directive has been a success story of EU legislation. But emerging contaminants, environmental protection, and the human right to safe drinking water all present fresh challenges that it needs to be adapted to.

The 2016 REFIT evaluation of the original directive concluded it was successful, achieving more than 99% safety compliance, but that there were still areas for improvement.
