How can journalists cover climate change through a climate justice lens?

In this webinar, the first AMWAJ Tabadul event of 2025, experts from ARIJ Network and Marea Media will explore why this approach is important for public awareness and policy.

Ahmed Ashour (ARIJ Network) will present the Climate Justice: Through an Investigative Lens guide, offering insights beyond its Arabic version.

Sofia Turati and Vittoria Torsello (Marea Media) will share case studies of local resistance to climate impacts, from a controversial pipeline in Italy to small-scale fishermen challenging EU funding rules.

The training programme, organised by AMWAJ and the Heinrich Boell Foundation Middle East, provides a participatory immersion in climate change and environmental justice issues in the MENA region. It is open to aspiring journalists from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan and Egypt. The training is open for applications until Monday 3 March 2025. 

In 2022, Morocco experienced an unprecedented wildfire crisis, with 54% of all fires recorded in the last decade occurring that year. An investigation by journalist Yassir Al-Makhtoum, supported by ARIJ, a media partner of AMWAJ, reveals that many were linked to deliberate deforestation for luxury developments. Despite the drought, Kambos Farm in Komiaki, Naxos, Greece, is a model of sustainability. Owner Vassilis Fakourelis remembers his grandfather’s love of farming and traditional irrigation. Today, his farm is still thriving, but nearby water sources have dried up, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions.

Did you know that Spain produces almost half of the world’s olive oil every year?
The Andalusian province of Jaén alone has around 66 million olive trees. The oil they produce is a source of national pride and a staple of many Spanish meals, whether drizzled over salads and toast or mixed into the perfect tortilla de patatas. But in 2022/23, extreme weather and soaring costs caused harvests to plummet, sending olive oil prices soaring by a staggering 111%. A kitchen staple suddenly became a luxury. MedWaves is part of the SEACURE, the EU-funded Horizon Europe project dedicated to demonstrating and scaling up innovative solutions for nutrient management. A new study in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews explores how crop residues in Western Macedonia could power the region’s transition to bioenergy. Led by Athanasios Lampropoulos and Georgios Varvoutis of CluBE, this first-of-its-kind research uncovers the untapped potential of agricultural waste in the energy transition.

The Climate Bridges Network, including AMWAJ member CENER 21 – Center for Energy, Environment and Resources, came together for the kick-off meeting to launch the transnational climate awareness campaign. Experts from the URBAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE worked with partners from CIPRA, the Center for Climate Change and CENER 21 to develop effective strategies for climate action.

Basilicata – whose coat of arms shows four blue waves to symbolise its four main rivers – is a region in southern Italy famous for its water sources, which also quench the thirst of neighbouring Puglia, Campania and Calabria. Read Alessia Melchiorre’s article.
