Water Scarcity in Cyprus

AMWAJ Reporting

Overview

Cyprus is one of the most water-stressed countries in Europe. The island nation, surrounded by the salty waters of the Mediterranean Sea, relies on desalination for as much as 80% of its freshwater supply. The process can be costly and energy consuming. With the Mediterranean heating around 20 times faster than any other region on the planet due to the climate crisis, the country’s younger generations will grow up in a different environment to that of their parents and grandparents. During a trip to Cyprus in 2022, AMWAJ spoke to several generations of local people to hear about their experience of water scarcity and learn more about their relationship with water on the island.
