The power of communication – an indispensable skill for generating impact
Date and time: 06/06/2023 11:00 am
Do you work for an environmental organisation that could benefit from better communication? Are you considering a job in environmental communication? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, we invite you to join us for an enriching workshop to learn about effective communication strategies and pathways for a career in environmental communication. The session will be held within the framework of the EU Green Week 2023. Come and learn from communication experts who already have tried and tested formulas for effectively reaching different audiences and find out how what working in environmental communications is like.
The Mediterranean is overflowing with culture and talent. It is also overflowing with water, land and air pollution and is increasingly feeling the pressures of a rising global temperature, with more frequent and intense droughts, floods, wildfires and heatwaves making the region increasingly unstable. The collective mindset towards the environment must shift to ensure a healthy Mediterranean and we can only do that through effective communication.
Effective environmental communication consists of digesting both scientific and non-scientific knowledge and making it accessible and appealing to different audiences so that they are sensitised about the environmental topic at hand. Organisations often struggle to effectively communicate environmental topics despite their relevance and importance, which is why it is important that they learn from communication experts who already have tried and tested formulas for effectively reaching different audiences.
This 2-hour training session is aimed at both environmental organisations seeking to improve their external communication and those who aspire to work in environmental communication. It will give participants the skill set needed for effectively communicating complex environmental issues and will offer insights into a career in environmental communication. We will cover the topic of news fatigue and information overload and propose new pathways for engaging with audiences.
The workshop will be divided into two parts:
- Part one: participants will be given pointers for effectively communicating environmental topics, including what communication formats and platforms to use. We will use the case studies of plastic pollution in the Mediterranean and the Catalonia 2023 drought as a basis to demonstrate how different communication approaches work.
- Part two: this part will be mostly addressed at those interested in pursuing a career in environmental communication. Participants will gain valuable insights from those working in the sector and will be able to ask questions related to a job in environmental communication.
