When the world slowed down during the COVID-19 lockdown, many people sought new ways to rethink their relationship with the environment. For Algerian leather tanner Abderrahmane Bouchou, that moment of reflection sparked a bold idea: transforming discarded fish skins into one of the most luxurious and eco-friendly leathers in the world.
“I was watching a documentary on ecological fashion alternatives when I discovered that fish skins could be transformed into high-end, sustainable leather,” recalls Bouchou. “The idea immediately captivated me, and I saw a huge opportunity to develop it right here in Algeria.”
That spark became MERSKIN, a pioneering sustainable textiles startup founded in 2022. With the support of Abdelmoumine Yahya Zerga, a PhD in chemical engineering, Bouchou began developing a process that combines tradition, innovation, and responsibility. Their mission is clear: to be pioneers in the field of sustainable fashion through one of the most luxurious leathers in the world, fish leather.
From Waste to Luxury
Fish processing industries in Algeria generate large amounts of discarded skins. Until recently, this valuable resource went unused. MERSKIN stepped in to close that loop. By upcycling salmon skins collected from over 15 local processors, the company has already recycled more than 800 kilograms of raw material, preventing waste while creating a unique, sustainable product.
At the tannery, these skins are transformed using an innovative vegetable tanning technique based entirely on natural plants, without any chemical products. The result is NOVA© salmon fish leather, offered in two finishes, smooth and scaled, and available in a variety of colors. This eco-responsible process positions MERSKIN as a pioneer in Algeria’s emerging sustainable blue economy.
Beyond leather production, MERSKIN collaborates with professional Algerian artisans to craft a range of high-end leather goods. Their current collection includes minimalist card holders with key rings and duo card holders with multiple slots, each piece combining elegance, durability, and ethical design.
The company also prioritizes sustainable packaging: all products are sold in reusable boxes designed to minimize plastic use. This holistic approach reflects MERSKIN’s philosophy that every stage of production, from raw material to final presentation, should respect both people and the planet.
“Our goal is not just to create beautiful products,” explains Bouchou. “We want to prove that style, luxury, and responsibility can coexist. Through MERSKIN, consumers can make ethical choices without sacrificing quality or design.”
Launching such an ambitious project in Algeria wasn’t without obstacles. Financing was scarce, and convincing others of the potential of fish leather required resilience. Bouchou invested his own savings and worked with limited resources to bring the project to life.
But perseverance paid off. In just three years, MERSKIN has achieved key milestones: developing two unique leather finishes, participating in entrepreneurship and innovation programs, and introducing a product that aligns with international sustainability standards.
A Vision for the Future
For Bouchou, MERSKIN is more than a business, it’s a vision of what the future of fashion and the economy could look like.
“I firmly believe that the future of our economy belongs to those who can combine innovation, responsibility, and a deep respect for nature,” he says. “The transition to a cleaner, circular production model isn’t just a choice, it’s an absolute necessity.”
Through MERSKIN, he hopes to inspire other entrepreneurs, proving that sustainability and profitability are not mutually exclusive. His ambition is to establish a sustainable Algerian leather industry that meets international standards and contributes to a greener, circular economy.
Drawing from his own journey, Bouchou offers a piece of advice to those considering launching an eco-friendly venture: “Don’t wait for perfect conditions to start. The greatest successes are born from small steps, unwavering passion, and adaptability. Believe in your vision, even if no one else does yet.”
MERSKIN stands today as a testament to creativity, perseverance, and innovation in Algeria’s sustainable fashion sector. By turning what was once waste into luxury, the startup is proving that responsibility can be stylish, and that green entrepreneurship has the power to reshape entire industries.
