“Given the vital role wetlands play as a natural habitat and a source for food and freshwater, we must protect them to preserve nature. That’s crystal clear. But at the same time, and perhaps surprisingly, protecting wetlands is also about preserving culture.
Let’s go for a stroll around Ghar El Melh, and just take a look at the cultural depth of the wetlands here. In this northern Tunisian lagoon, culture is everywhere. This place has hosted a Phoenician colony, a Roman city, an Ottoman fort, and even a pirate base! It is this rich and diverse history that built the cultural traditions you can see today.
Around this time of year, if you peek around the lagoon, you might notice an artisanal fisherman showing his latest prize catch – probably an eel. Traditional fishing techniques have been passed down from father to son for generations. You might see a father teach his son how to bait squid with crab traps. The traditional way of fishing in the wetlands is at complete odds with intensive overfishing: it respects natural boundaries, and does not take more than what nature can provide.”

In the common imagination, wetlands are often seen as unproductive wastelands that need to be ‘dealt with’. However, wetlands hold an immeasurable environmental and ecological value, and they serve as carbon sinks, diverse animal habitats, and cultural heirtage locations.
Off Your Map is a collaboration between 15 partners, with the funding and support of the MAVA Foundation. It raises awareness for the critical role coastal wetlands play as resilient Nature-Based Solutions in the fight against climate change, and advocates for a more effective conservation of these biodiversity and culture-rich natural habitats. |

World Bank helps sustain Palestinian wastewater treatment services

The World Bank approved on 10 June 2020 a US$10 million grant to finance the operation and maintenance of the North Gaza wastewater treatment plant for four years and build the conditions for sustainable wastewater treatment services. In line with previous partnerships in the sector, the new Wastewater Management Sustainability Project will be granted an additional US$3.7 million by donor partners, members of the Partnership for Infrastructure Development Multi-Donor Trust Fund (PID MDTF) administered by the World Bank.
“Gaza has suffered for years from environmental disaster due to sewage pollution affecting hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. The new project builds on the World Bank and donor partners’ extended efforts to complete the long-awaited construction of the North Gaza Wastewater Treatment Plant. Now, the new project focuses on operating and maintaining the treatment plant while gradually building the institutional capacity for sustainable self-management,” said Kanthan Shankar, World Bank Country Director for West Bank and Gaza.
