Thirsty Gulf cities tap into treated wastewater

“Our main objectives with the treatment of wastewater are, first of all, to protect ground water from the illegal dumping to nearby wadis (dry channel beds) as well as the leakage or overflow of sewage septic tanks. Both have been dramatically affecting the underground water in Oman. Secondly, we are strongly endeavoured to reduce the dependence of fresh water from desalination plants and the scarce aquifers’, explains Haya Water CEO.
Oman’s ancient groundwater channels, known as aflaj, feats of hydraulic engineering added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, are also drying up. Unregulated pumping of groundwater is depleting aquifers and causing the long-reliable channels to run dry, according to a study published at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.”

El Guettar commune in Tunisia developing climate actions ideas

El Guettar commune in Tunisia and its team in charge of the Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) development, was invited on the July 6th, 2020 by the Clima-Med project team, to participate in an online workshop in order to identify project ideas to be developed into action sheets on adaptation and mitigation at the local level.
The workshop was organized by the Clima-Med team in charge of the Maghreb region. From mid-July onward, the workshop will be followed by 11 successive workshops with other Clima-Med partner municipalities in Tunisia – Nabeul, Maâmoura, Hammam Sousse, Sisseb Dhriaat, Monastir, Rades, Bizerte, Sousse, Chihya, Medenine and Kairouan. |

UfM declares climate finance a priority

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) members states, scientific experts, civil society representatives and other relevant climate actors gathered at the 2020 UfM Mediterranean Climate Week to discuss key climate-related issues.
The UfM presented its Climate Action Plan for the period 2021-2025. The main focus of its work is the reinforcement of the Science – Society – Policy nexus, including the role of youth, the active regional participation in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the Paris Agreement, to be submitted this year, and the mobilization of climate finance.

Call for abstracts on youth and water security

UNESCO is devoted to engaging with youth as leaders, knowledge-holders and innovators in the water sector. One of the main ways of engaging with youth and young water professionals in the water sector is by encouraging them to become more involved in research, development and innovation, that address water security issues. Within the context of Africa Water Week, UNESCO is in touch with several international journals about publishing the printed and online version of a special issue that will focus on the importance of water security and youth engagement in Africa.
The main objectives of this activity includes to; improve the visibility of the scientific contribution of youth that address water related challenges in Africa, contribute to the advance of and address knowledge gaps on water security issues in Africa with a focus on the experience of youth and young professionals and to inspire youth to become more involved in the co-production and application of knowledge.
The deadline to submit extended abstracts is 30 July 2020.

With a rich and unique history spanning 29 years, World Water Week has developed into the world’s most influential, innovative and dynamic movement focused on transforming global water challenges.
World Water Week is organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and takes place in Stockholm, Sweden on an annual basis. It has been the focal point for global water issues since 1991.
To help bridge the gap between the 2019 and 2021 World Water Weeks, SIWI invites convenors to host a virtual adaptation of their World Water Week 2020-approved session(s) – from wherever they are – between 24 and 28 August 2020, under the umbrella of #WWWeekAtHome.
